Design and architecture has the ability to constrain, suppress, embrace, limit or uplift. From anti-homeless benches to wildlife bridges to ICE Detention Facilities, design represents a spectrum of the best and worst intentions of culture, community and our integration with the natural world. The essays in Issue 43.1 are not the usual lionization of the designer and the architect as the generators of human wellness and bodily autonomy, instead they explore the failures and misuse of such. "A Human Kind of Problem" attempts to shine a light on the architects contributing not only to spaces of human suffering, but also to those of healing. It is a call to resist the ubiquitous pressure to contribute to fascist design and to instead advocate for building a world based on comfort and accessibility. It is an invitation to examine the consequences of the spaces we create and to imagine types of design rooted not in control or exclusion, but in healing and care.
